Unit 4: Celebrations Reflection
For this unit of celebrations, each of my studios was a representation of something that was going on in my life at the time of the studio that I was celebrating. The first studio, the modeling clay puppet, is a puppet of a turkey. This is because Thanksgiving was coming up and I was so excited to go home and see my family for the holiday! Also, it had been a long time since we had had a break from school and I was definitely ready to not have to really think about school for almost a week. The second studio for this unit was my favorite one. I created this art piece right after the Cardinals played in the World Series, and though they lost, I still had a lot of spirit for my Birds! My whole family are huge Cardinals fans, and this year almost every game I attended I went to with my family. My mom, dad, sisters, brother, grandmas, cousins, everyone. As the Dalai Lama states in Pink (2005), "I believe the very purpose of our life is to seek happiness." (p. 220). I completely agree with this statement. Going to Cardinals games is one of my favorite things to do with my family because it is something for anyone of any age to do and enjoy! And being able to express these ideas through my art work makes it even better. The last studio was based a little bit off my lesson plan because I used printmaking for my chosen media. I just used crayons and colored over a flower petal to created a flower effect on the piece of paper. Then, because it's the holiday season, I decided to make my work of art celebrate all the holidays. There are presents and ornaments and colorful lights spread all about the picture. I actually hung up this piece of art in my kitchen for some holiday decoration!
I loved the celebration big idea because there were so many possibilities of what could be celebrated and represented in my works of art. This big idea can be used for all sorts of lessons when it comes to art integration in my future classroom. It can especially be used for holiday celebrations like I did for two of my studios, but it can also be used for things other than just holidays, like my peers did in some of their studios. The students could celebrate family, seasons, life, special events, and anything that they think is worth celebrating. Bang says (1991) "We see pictures as extensions of reality" (p. 60). This is definitely true when it comes to being able to create art about the things we celebrate in our own lives. What I like most about celebrations is that it can be paired with other big ideas! It can be paired with the other three we did in class: identity, relationships, and stories, which makes it a great big idea to use at the end of the year because it ties many big ideas together. I definitely think that I will use these studios in my future classroom because they are fun and allow the students to use things other than just paper and markers. I loved getting to use the modeling clay, so I know that my students would enjoy this a lot as well. Creating art on the computer is also something that would be helpful and fun in my class, especially since technology is so prominent in our lives this day in age. Being able to use so many different mediums is great for students to learn so that they can see that art can be created in all different ways!
